The first Ip Man movie (released in 2008) was the first movie for which I ever watched the English dubbed version. I am not sure if it is because of the amazing fight scenes that impressed me the most, or the great acting that made me want to continue watching. The sequel (released in 2013) is probably one of my favorite movies from the last six years, and it is a rare case in which a sequel is even better than its predecessor. And finally, in 2017, when I was still very excited about the upcoming Ip Man 3, I learned that the beloved martial art master was going to appear in a new web series.
Ip Man is a legend. He is a martial arts prodigy from China who left his family and traveled to Hong Kong to teach Wing Chun, a Chinese martial art. He has been portrayed in numerous films, and has been loved around the world. His films have been shown at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival. He is loved by young and old alike.
The Ip Man franchise of martial arts films is one of the most celebrated and successful of all time, with eight feature films, five television series, over a hundred specials, and a hugely successful action-adventure video game. Fans of these films are often surprised to learn that the first four films, directed by Mako Shinozaki, were not directed by the famous Bruce Lee, but rather by his stunt double, Yip Man. The stories are fun, too. The first film is about the founder of the Wing Chun style of kung fu, while the second follows his son, who seeks to learn his father’s legacy. The final film focuses on the Wing Chun master’s last student, who takes up the mantle of his
Bruce Lee’s old teacher, martial arts grandmaster Ip Man, is regarded as the grandmaster of the Wing Chun fighting technique. Ip Man (2008), starring Donnie Yen, was the first of a series of films, sequels, and spin-offs based on the life and times of the legendary grandmaster.
Ip Man has a total of nine films. The Ip Man series was developed by director Wilson Yip and star Donnie Yen and consists of four films: Ip Man (2008), Ip Man 2 (2010), Ip Man 3 (2015), and The Finale of Ip Man 4 (2019). With Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, director Yuen Wo Ping developed a spin-off (2018). With The Legend Is Born: Ip Man (2010) and its sequel Ip Man: The Final Fight (2012), director Herman Yau established his own series (2013). In addition, there are two stand-alone films: The Grandmaster (2013) and Ip Man and Four Kings (2019).
The best way to view Ip Man movies is in sequence.
Except for the Wilson Yip – Donnie Yen series and the Herman Yau franchise, the Ip Man films are not all linked chronologically. Because Master Z: Ip Man Legacy (2018) is a sequel to Ip Man 3 (2015), it’s recommended to watch it alongside the other four. Because the following two films are stand-alones, they may be seen in any order. The following is the ideal order in which to see the Ip Man films:
- — Ip Man (2008)
- Ip Man 2 is a sequel to Ip Man (2010)
- Ip Man 3 is the third installment in the Ip Man franchise (2015)
- Ip Man Legacy – Master Z (2018)
- Ip Man 4: The Finale (2019)
- Ip Man – The Legend Begins (2010)
- The Final Fight – Ip Man (2013)
- – The Grandmaster (2013)
- Four Kings and Ip Man — (2019)
