Riot Titles was able to extend their portfolio with new games based on popular genres but giving them their own twist thanks to the success of the main game. They can design their own characters or take well-known League of Legends characters and place them in new situations. Riot Gaming seems unstoppable with each new success, and with Arcane, their new TV series created to commemorate League of Legends’ 10-year anniversary, the firm demonstrates that its intellectual assets are ready to go beyond the domain of games and into a variety of other media.
Riot Games collaborated on Arcane with Fortiche Productions, a French animation firm that has assisted Riot Games in the creation of cinematics for their games throughout the years. Hailee Steinfeld, Ella Purnell, Kevin Alejandro, Katie Leung, Jason Spisak, Toks Olagundoye, JB Blanc, and Harry Lloyd feature in the series, which depicts the origin tales of various League of Legends’ “Champions.” It concentrates on the backstories of fan favorites like Vin, Jinx, Jayce, and Viktor, in particular. As the city of Piltover’s class disputes between the affluent and the poor get more tense, new technology threatens to transform the world forever.
Riot Games has been constructing a complex and intriguing universe for more than a decade, and it’s the ideal setting for telling tales full of mystery, action, and drama. Arcane is one of the finest animated series on any platform, not just Netflix. It speaks volumes about Riot Games’ skill, since most of the work is done internally by members of the development team, from scriptwriting to directing and music. Some of them may have had little prior experience working in television or cinema, but who have stepped up and produced a real piece of art.
The majority of the animation work in this TV series is done by Fortiche Productions, and their work is excellent. Until far, the company has mostly produced commercials and music videos for Riot Games, and Arcane is without a doubt their most ambitious project to date. They were, fortunately, up to the challenge. Arcane’s presentation is flawless in every way. The characters are all quite well-designed, and their motions are fluid enough to make them seem more alive and present than many live-action films.
The studio has also done an outstanding job of reproducing Piltover in all of its glory. The affluent and impoverished portions of the city are both bursting with detail, and for a genre that has had a hard time gaining acceptance in the visual field, Fortiche nails the steampunk palette to a tee. You’d wish the city was real and that you could visit it with each new episode.
Arcane’s aesthetic appearance isn’t the only excellent aspect. The plot is great, giving some of these characters deep and complex backstories that were previously merely concepts in the games. They’ve grown into such compelling characters that having several seasons of Arcane follow their travels is a thrilling proposition. The fact that the majority of the writing is done internally by Riot Games demonstrates their ability to tell tales and how much control they have over their own characters and themes.
The soundtrack by Alexander Temple and Alex Seaver, who compose music for the games, is breathtaking and contributes to the creation of a distinct mood for Piltover and its environs. The sound mix is also fantastic, particularly during the action sections, when you can feel every punch and explosion.
The voice performers have also done an outstanding job. The biggest stars on the cast are Hailee Steinfeld and Ella Purnell, who do a fantastic job of bringing Vi and Powder to life, but every other actor swings and hits big. Arcane makes incredible use of genuine voice actors, professionals who have worked in the field for years and whose voices are loaded with such authority and richness that the characters seem really distinct. It’s a great achievement, and it’s also a good thing to do, since in today’s world, most major animation companies choose to hire only celebrities in their most essential parts, rather than professional voice actors.
There are three acts in Arcane. Three episodes make up each act, for a total of nine episodes. From November 6 until November 20, Netflix will release three episodes every Saturday. This release schedule is ideal, considering each episode lasts around 45 minutes. There’s a lot of information here, so take your time to process everything. Make no doubt about it. It would have been a wonderful binge-watch if Arcane had released all nine episodes at one, but having an interval between acts becomes a great way to absorb the tale and build expectations for what is to follow.
If Arcane is popular enough to merit future seasons, we might be looking at the start of a massive Netflix series that could last for years. Riot Games has a diverse cast of individuals with fascinating backstories to explore. Let’s hope that word of mouth spreads quickly about how great this is.
